Does Umbra work without signal?

Yes — that's the point. Contact times, alarms, recipes and rehearsal all run on-device. Only the base map imagery needs a connection; load your area once before heading out.

Why does it ask for notification permission?

The filter-safety alarms ("FILTER OFF — diamond ring") are local notifications. Without the permission your phone stays silent on eclipse day. On the day itself, also use Live guidance inside the app for spoken cues.

Is my location shared?

No. It's used on your device to compute your verdict and never transmitted. You can skip the permission and tap the map instead. See the privacy policy.

How accurate are the times?

Contact times are computed from NASA's published Besselian elements; our solver reproduces NASA's reference values to within seconds (at the canonical greatest-duration point: 2m18.18s vs NASA's 2m18.21s). Exact-second display is part of Umbra Pro.

Is Pro a subscription?

No. Pay once. The August 2027 eclipse (the century's longest, over Spain, North Africa and Egypt) is included in the same purchase. Restore anytime via Apple; refunds are handled by Apple.

Eye & gear safety

Never look at, or point a camera at, the partial phases without a certified solar filter (ISO 12312-2 for eyes; a front-mounted solar filter for lenses). Umbra's cues help with timing, but safety is your responsibility.
